Get ready to experience unique visions from around the world! On 16 October 2026, 20:00 at ARTos House,NicosiaCinePoems Cyprus Festival Free EntryAmong the 13 selected videopoems: A Cat Has Seven Lives Maria Korporal | Italy„The starting point for the video was a series of digital photomontages composed of several elements: old and new photographs, scanned materials like ropes, perspex engravings, film, leafs. With various digital animation techniques these “prime materials” have been processed into a dynamical sequence of images and sounds, in which the seven lives of the cat follow each other in a temporal line. Introduced by the sounds of bells or drums, each life presents a new dimension: an inner experience of time juxtaposed against the external course of things, one of the artist’s favourite subjects. The seventh life is the longest part of the movie and is entitled: “Looking for the Hermit and Not Finding Him”, a very common theme in classic Chinese poetry, usually describing a spirit-journey. In the imaginary landscape in Maria Korporal’s video, the female figure, walking on and off stage, could be the artist in her never ending search for the sublime, but it could also represent the hermit gathering, too busy to pay us any mind.“The video closes with a poem by Taoist poet Chia Tao (779-843):Under a pine I asked his pupil Who said: “Master's gone gathering balm Only somewhere about the mountain: The cloud's so thick that I don't know where.”Director Biography - Maria Korporal:Maria Korporal was born 1962 in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands. She studied graphics and painting at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts in Breda. During her studies she began working with photography and she graduated with, among other things, a video installation. After her studies, in 1986, she moved to Italy, where she lived until 2013 in Sant'Oreste (Rome). Subsequently she moved to Berlin, where she now lives and works. Her work has been exhibited and awarded worldwide, with screenings at major international festivals. Website: www.mariakorporal.comDirector Statement:My artistic practice spans video art, animation, drawing, interactive projects, and installations, combining digital and analogue techniques. Using narrative, direct imagery, and sound, my work invites deep viewer engagement and explores the shifting boundaries between virtuality and reality, often addressing urgent social and ecological issues.Recent global turbulence has strongly influenced my work, raising questions about how digital signs might be interpreted in a world without electricity or networks. After years of working primarily digitally, I returned to charcoal drawing as a foundation for new video works, where analogue spontaneity merges with digital transformation. Alongside this, I continue to develop VR, AR, 360°, and 3D animation, combining hand-made and high-tech processes in an ongoing dialogue.Poetry MOVES International Festival ...

My “magic Sappho box” is part of my video installation THE Q OF SAPPHO, which will be shown in the exhibition Spieglein Spieglein an der Wand, wer ist M/W/D in diesem Land?, October 9 – November 1, 2026, Galerie VBK Berlin @spieglein_spieglein_m.w.d @verein_berliner_kuenstler Galerie Verein Berliner Künstler THE Q OF SAPPHO takes its starting point from Sappho’s famous Ode to Aphrodite, in which the legendary poet from Lesbos calls upon the goddess for help with an unrequited and passionate love.Sappho is renowned for her love of women, and her poetry has become closely associated with female same-sex desire. Yet for centuries, this aspect of her work was obscured, reinterpreted and suppressed. Even the gender of the people she addressed in her poems was sometimes altered by translators, with “she” becoming “he”. The project explores this history and the persistent assumptions behind it — ultimately confronting the notion that female sexuality does not exist.Info: mariakorporal.com/the-q-of-sappho/ or link in bio.#sappho #odetoaphrodite #lgbtqart #augmentedrealityart #queerart ...
