The REM phase (Rapid Eye Movement) is considered the most important stage of sleep for mental regeneration. During this time, the eyes move rapidly under closed lids, the brain is highly active, the body deeply relaxed – most dreams occur in this phase.
In September 2025, the exhibition rem will take place in the former gunpowder vault of the JCK – a space of historical density and architectural rawness.
When the house is seen as a phenomenological model of the inner self, the cellar gains a special significance – particularly from a psychological perspective. In The Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard describes the house as our personal corner of the world, “where the non-self protects the self.” The cellar, in his view, is the dark being of the house, connected to deeper layers, memories – a space of irrational depth. Those who allow themselves to dream there come into contact with hidden, unconscious, and subconscious realms. The stairs to the cellar are always a descent – a movement inward.
Parallel to the exhibition zärtlich / czuly, presented in the bright upper galleries of JCK, rem opens a contrasting, deeper world of experience. In the dark, rough-walled cellar, visitors will encounter works of art that explore depth, archaism, discomfort, dreaminess, light in darkness (media art), irrationality, and subtlety.
15 artists from Poland, Germany, and Cuba will transform the space into an immersive landscape that invites visitors to resonate with their own interiority – a space of the subconscious, transformation, and the intangible.
